Patchface: the strangest Game of Thrones character?

Chia sẻ
  • Xuất bản 08 Th04, 2018
  • Patchface is one of the weirdest characters in the Game of Thrones books - a creepy jester who lives with Shireen on Dragonstone. What do Patchface’s songs mean? Is Patchface a prophet of the Drowned God? How is Patchface connected to white walkers, Deep Ones, and greyscale?

I forgot just how dark the world of the books is. Everything is bleak and there are all of these different powerful forces in competition with each other and all of them are essentially terrifying Eldrige horrors (Rhllor, The Others, The Drowned God, the tree dude, etc.)

In the quote, "We will march into the see and out again", I inferred that Patchface was having delusions of grandeur about being the saviour of the Wildlings stuck at Hardhome; they don't have enough boats to escape so his addled mind wants to merely lead them under the sea to escape.

In the books there is a little fear of the Others walking under the sea and thus circumventing the wall, but in the show they seemed to have an aversion to entering it at Hardhome. Is this the show hinting that the Drowned god resents the Great Other? (In contrast to that quote from Mojorro)

I don’t think any gods as we would define them actually exist. I think that under the sea is under the green see of the werewood network. The death or near death experience of patchface probably awakened his greenseer powers, but damaging him beyond his ability to be useful. Shoutout to lml. Once you get to the sea stuff he talks about being an illusion to the werewood network, the. You get to see things a bit clearer and simpler.

You know, to all people say that show was always about politics: no. I mean, look at that shit! Magic and fantasy in GRRM's books is amazing and he barely spent time exploring it. Like, come on, give us high fantasy spinoff already.

Game of Thrones isn’t about magic, it’s about people and war. Magic was just meant to be a plot device, this ain’t Harry Potter where magic is the main focus. If you want a regular high fantasy, go read/watch Lord of the Rings

''Under the sea the mermen feast on starfish soup, and all the serving men are crabs..'' Sounds like a prediction about Wun Wun killing Patrek of King's Mountain(pretty much turns him into soup) whose sigil is a five pointed star(is this a Sponge Bob reference?), crabs could be a reference to knights who sent Patrek.
''I will lead it! We will march into the sea and out again. Under the waves we will ride seahorses, and mermaids will blow seashells to announce our coming, oh, oh, oh.'' In relation to the first theory Merman/maids are mythological creatures as are giants. So I'm guessing he predicted that Giants will announce the coming of wildlings from Hardhome with horns, or it's an inversion of that prophecy and Others will come with wights who will sound the Joramun's horn. Since a giant's horn was burned in the fire (fake Joramun's horn), this time it would be a real Joramun's horn and it will tare down the wall.

There is nothing to digging about Patchface. You morons just creates silly theories about cheesy fantasy book. GRR Martin surely created a world but it never get close to the The Lord of The Rings or Dune. He just randomly put some details on his story. Also some silly feminist crap and psychologic stuff. There is no between Patchface's mind and Theon or Ramsay. There is nothing under the sea.

+2299905 He did not only gave the month, he gave the exact fucking date. How hard is it to read between the lines? I'll copy what he said down here for you:
"“If I don’t have THE WINDS OF WINTER in hand when I arrive in New Zealand for worldcon, you have here my formal written permission to imprison me in a small cabin ...."
There is a fucking date for Worldcon in New Zealand. 2020, 29 July. So.. euh, yeah he did give a fucking months.. and the exact day. Not sure what you are on about.
The last 2 books will indeed be around the 3000 pages each. However, let's say Winds will be 1500 of that. Still a lot, but equally good writers as GRRM put that kind of pages out within 2 years. GRRM has done a ton of sideprojects over the past couple years, even putting out large books himself. That's his right.
However, writing 1500 over 8 years is nothing to praise. To me it seems he either is a perfectionist and the success of the show made him doubt himself or he just made such a big mess that he has a hard time wrapping it up.

Anyway, these 1500 pages are gonna take him at least 9 years - that is if he makes his deadline. Will the other 1500 take another 9 years as well? Yeah, I'm having doubts on whether the series will be finished. I'm definitely waiting, but I've been honest with myself too and accepted the series to not be finished. If it is: great I've got 2 books to finished in 2 decades from now, it it isn't I didn't set myself up for disappointment.

+No No he never said any month, he just said that the saga will be concluded, and if he needs to add more scenes and chapters, he will. The man talked about two books that together will have around 3000 pages, thats insane! And that takes time, we can only patiently wait, this isn't the only books around!

    • No No
      No No 2 ngày trước

+Creep vids You are a damn fool if you still have high hopes for the series to be finished. GRRM actually said today that he is confident he will have Winds finished next year July (and otherwise people should luck him up)... but I don't trust him with that. He said the same shit many, many years ago.

And even if we get Winds in the next ~2 years.... the series will at least need A Dream of Spring to be finished, if GRRM manages to get it all in 2 books. I dont have high hopes for A Dream.

The idea about patchface biting people seemed to make sense, but it'd make more sense if a plague of grey scale was started by Patchface (or someone else) kissing Shireen's cheek. Since Patches had bloody lips in Mel's vision, and Garin is supposed to rise from the sea to spread greyscale with "a grey kiss." And there was even that part in ADWD where Selyse made sure to kiss Shireen on her non-grey cheek.

P.S. Is it a coincidence that Asshai, home of the "fire god" is the city furthest to the East, and the Iron Islands, home of the "water god" is the furthest to the west?

I always found Patchface unsettling when he appeared in the books. From his bizarre outward appearance, to his obsessive wittering about the things he knows he knows that go on under the sea. I never stopped to think he might be relaying useful hints - a prophet, for want of a better word. And that would seem to be the point: he's GoT's version of Cassandra - the character from Greek mythology whom the Gods gave the gift of prophecy, together with the curse that none would believe her, until, of course, it was too late. He is too far removed from humanity to be taken seriously. Only an innocent and lonely child, pays any attention to him. The reader might even be more inclined to look for meaning in his aquatic ramblings if he were Shireen's imaginary friend, rather than the worst.jester.ever whom everyone can see (and presumably avoid, whenever possible). So, as always, it's refreshing to stumble across a cogent fan theory such as this one which not only makes perfect sense, but perhaps reveals even more layers and nuance to Martin's staggering craft
